Comments

The inscription on this sealing shows the symbol for the Tjay bird (sign G47) in addition to the two symbols for Narmer within the serekh. This has been interpreted as meaning “Narmer the Masculine”, by von Beckerath (1999), however according to Regulski (2010, p.126), “The third sign (the Tjay bird) is not an integral part of the royal name since it occurs so infrequently.” Godron (1949) suggested that the extra sign is not part of the name, but was put inside the serekh for compositional convenience. Helck 1987 interprets it as the seal of the Vizier of Narmer based on G47 representing the Vizier.
